Where the evidence comes from, and how far it carries

Evidence Transfer Matrix

For each biological system we record which species produced the cited data, and whether extrapolating to another species is defensible.

The count is of primary sources actually cited in each synthesis, by species: three dots from six sources, two from three, one from one. The dots measure how dense the evidence is, not how strong an effect is.
