Dust exposure and pulmonary inflammation in Standardbred racehorses fed dry hay or haylage: A pilot study

2021 · The Veterinary Journal

Compared with dry hay, haylage lowered both the respirable dust (0.02 against 0.06 mg/m³) and beta-glucan and the neutrophils of the lung lavage, although in only seven horses.

Effects of low-dust forages on dust exposure, airway cytology, and plasma omega-3 concentrations in Thoroughbred racehorses: A randomized clinical trial

2022 · Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine

Steamed hay and haylage lowered dust exposure to the same degree, yet only haylage reduced the neutrophils within six weeks and shifted the fatty acid profile towards the inflammation-resolving side.

Efficacy of dexamethasone, salbutamol, and reduced respirable particulate concentration on aerobic capacity in horses with smoke-induced mild asthma

2020 · Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine

When the fine particulate load of the ambient air fell from about 36 to about 7 micrograms per cubic metre, maximal oxygen uptake rose by 13.2%, with no difference between the corticosteroid and saline groups; the final exercise test in every animal followed an additional dose of salbutamol, and a comparison group kept under continued exposure was lacking.

Inhaled ciclesonide is efficacious and well tolerated in the treatment of severe equine asthma in a large prospective European clinical trial

2021 · Equine Veterinary Journal

Among 224 horses, 73.4% reached the defined success on inhaled ciclesonide against 43.2% on sham treatment; the authors stress the considerable placebo share.

Use of inhaled ciclesonide for treatment of moderate asthma in Thoroughbred racehorses

2025 · Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine

Inhaled ciclesonide improved clinical signs and mast cell proportion in racehorses with moderate asthma even without any change in husbandry; the effect on neutrophilic forms remained unresolved.

Intra-articular triamcinolone acetonide improves lung function in horses with severe asthma

2019 · Equine Veterinary Journal

Triamcinolone injected into the hocks improved the lung function of asthmatic horses within a week, so that a joint treatment can delay the diagnosis of a lung disease.

Effects of azithromycin on bronchial remodeling in the natural model of severe neutrophilic asthma in horses

Effect of injected dexamethasone on relative cytokine mRNA expression in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in horses with mild asthma

2019 · BMC Veterinary Research

Horses with mild asthma showed interleukin-17 raised around fivefold and interleukin-10 lowered; dexamethasone lowered individual cytokines but did not change the cell profile, which points to continuing environmental exposure as the driver.
